Community Spotlight: Be A Mentor With Big Brothers Big Sister

  |     |   Lifestyle

“Someone you haven’t even met yet is wondering what it’d be like to meet someone like you.”

What a powerful statement this is! That someone may be a child who needs to have a positive influence in their life, and you might be their answer to this. Mentoring is a calling but something that can benefit you the mentor just as much as the child you are mentoring. January is national mentoring month and is the perfect time to take on this fulfilling duty.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chicago offers mentoring to over 2100 children in Metro Chicago and is always looking for more volunteers to help out with all those they serve.

Be A Mentor

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister can be just an enjoyable for the Big as it is for the Little. Helping shape a child’s future by inspiring positive change in their lives and showing them they can achieve anything they put their mind to can help lead your Little on the path to success and also bring your own personal growth.

Littles are from the ages of 7 through high school graduation and will be matched with their Big based on gender identity, location and interests. There are match support specialists that will check in with you monthly to see how things are going. Bigs must be over 21 years old and will undergo a background check, reference checks, interviewing process and training.

You will spend time with your Little 2-4 times per month. There are two types of meetings; site based or community based. Community based will be time spent together learning about local culture, enjoying educational opportunities and developing new skills and hobbies.

One hundred percent of Littles who are in this program will go on to graduate High School and pursue their dreams. Taking time out of your day can literally change someone’s path in life and be their greatest gift, a free gift, your gift of time.
