Neighborhood Spotlight: Evanston Business District Seeks to Bring Rainbows to Neighborhood

  |     |   Lifestyle

It is going to be a colorful week around town as participating businesses within the Evanston Business District aim to cover the entire district with rainbows.

Starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, participating local businesses on the Main-Dempster Mile will be handing out rainbow ribbon to guests in an attempt to cover as many of the local trees and fixtures with rainbows as possible.

"Virtually without exception, the businesses on the Mile are owned by people who are eager to be inclusive, and their businesses are safe and positive places for members of the LGBTQ+ community to shop," said Katherine Gotsick, executive director of the Main-Dempster Mile.  "After next week, we hope everyone will see all the rainbows and know it for themselves."

Guests of participating businesses will receive a length of ribbon that they can tie around a nearby tree. Kids of all ages are also welcome to bring their own sidewalk chalk and draw rainbows on the sidewalk throughout the district.

Starting at 5 p.m., several businesses will begin serving complimentary pride-themed food or beverages to guests during the Pride Night Out Sip & Shop.

"As an Main-Dempster Mile resident, I want the entire Evanston (and beyond) LGBTQ+ community to know that where I live and shop is safe, inclusive and filled with joy," said Jackson Adams, a volunteer for the project and LGBTQ+ business owner who was a driving force behind this event.

"I feel like the best way to honor our neighborhood is through service,” he added. “When we get involved, it makes our community better and allows for opportunities such as this one."

Participating businesses include stumble & relish, niceLena & Friends, Thrift House-Junior League of Evanston-North Shore, The Wine Goddess and EYE Boutique Kloset. More businesses will be added as they are confirmed.
