Neighborhood Spotlight: The Main-Dempster Mile is a Wonderland!

Jump down the rabbit hole with Alice on the Main-Dempster Mile next month. No, seriously, this is not a drill.

The Main-Dempster Mile has announced it will be welcoming Upended Productions’ remount of “Alice,” on Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 22 through Oct. 21.

“Alice-goers will stop into charming, niche shops on Main Street that they might not have otherwise, and no doubt, they’ll be back to shop and eat long after the show is over,” said Katherine Gotsick, executive director of the Main-Dempster Mile.

The performance is an ambulatory, multi-disciplinary theatrical experience that has had two very successful runs in Andersonville. The audience, traveling in groups of 15, follows a white rabbit to various locations throughout the Main-Dempster Mile neighborhood in Evanson, ducking into storerooms and back patios, through bookstores, restaurants, and breweries along the way.

Chapters of the book are divided among Chicago and Evanston fringe theater companies, visual/film artists and musicians, and performed in various independently-owned businesses throughout the Mile.

“This show has so many elements of good: great performances, community engagement, arts-based placemaking and relationship building between artists and business owners,” said Noelle Krimm, founder of Upended Productions, and producer of “Alice.” “Way back when I was childless, I was just creating a cool show, and Alice IS that.”

And now, as an Evanston mom, Krimm said she feels even more of a drive to help the neighborhood grow and prosper.

“I don’t want Evanston’s small local businesses to crumble under the weight of their bills as Amazon and the big box chains take over, because what small local businesses bring to the community is vital,” she said. “They should be cherished…this neighborhood is magical (and) ‘Alice’ celebrates that.”

The show begins at August LaCapra State Farm at 829 Chicago Ave., where guests will browse original works of visual art inspired by “Alice in Wonderland,” a press release said. From there, they will embark on their adventure, stopping at local favorites like Sketchbook Brewing Company and Chicago-Main Newsstand.

All tickets sold between Sept. 29 and 30 will benefit Mudlark Theater, to benefit their scholarship program.

“What a unique, interesting, cool way to introduce people to our businesses,” Gotsick said.
