Summer Date Ideas on the Main-Dempster Mile in Evanston

  |     |   Lifestyle, Small Business Spotlight

Quite honestly, it all sounds absolutely perfect. The sky is the most vivid shade of blue, with not a cloud to be seen. The breeze keeps things at the ideal temperature while also offering sensory samplings of what’s on the menu at the local restaurants. Best of all, it’s date night in Evanston, which means the possibilities are endless.

The Main-Dempster Mile offers residents and visitors alike a myriad of options for taking date night to the next level. In addition to being home to many of Evanston’s best local shops and eateries, events are plentiful, particularly in the summer.

"The Main-Dempster Mile is a neighborhood that's both charming and contemporary," said Katherine Gotsick, executive director of the Main-Dempster Mile. "It's a place where one-of-a-kind businesses welcome you inside for one-of-a-kind experiences. Not only that, but there is always a delicious local eatery nearby to start or cap off the night."

Here are a few of our favorite local date ideas:

  1. Cultivate your terrarium skills by learning how to design, build, and care for your own terrarium. Everything you need to create one of these beautiful treasures is included with registration, which is $75 per person at Cultivate Urban Rainforest & Gallery, 704 Main Street. Click here for a full list of classes and community events.

  2. Create something beautiful for your home at a do-it-yourself sign making session at Board & Brush Creative Studio, 802 Dempster Street. Guests choose their own wood sign from the gallery of more than 100 options, and are provided with the materials they need to create a gorgeous piece for their home. You can choose from a variety of paint colors and wood stain finishes in the workshop, which does have a bar in the studio. The cost is $65, which includes materials and the finished product. For more information, or to book a class, visit Board & Brush online.

  3. Catch a show and enjoy a delicious meal at Evanston SPACE, which shares an entrance with Union Pizzeria & Bar. In the more than 10 years that SPACE has been open, it has hosted the likes of The Lumineers, Alabama Shakes, and Graham Parker, all in its intimate candle-lit setting. The idea is to allow fans to be up close and personal with their favorite acts, all within close proximity of an eatery that brings its own personality to the table. Prices vary, but for more information, visit SPACE online or Union online.

  4. Take a class on a variety of wine-related topics from the Wine Goddess herself at The Wine Goddess, 702 Main Street. Classes range from Wine 101 to Wines of France, and often there is also live music as well. The cost varies depending on the class, but to learn more visit them online.

  5. Day date anyone? The American Toby Jug Museum and FEW Tasting Room are within about 30 steps of each other and pack a powerful day date punch. The American Toby Jug Museum is home to more than 8,000 Toby and character jugs in 97 cabinets, making it the largest collection of its kind in the world. Admission is free, but they’re only open until 5 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month. When you’re done there, follow the smell of grains into the alley next door to find the well-hidden FEW Spirits Distillery & Tasting Room.
