If you love the Wine Walk in Evanston, there’s something new and exciting to check out this month.
In what Main-Dempster Mile Executive Director Katherine Gotsick called the Wine Walk’s “baby sister event,” the final details of the first annual event have been announced.
On Thursday, May 17, The Main-Dempster Mile will host its first “Sauce Walk! A Neighborhood Art & Dessert Crawl.” The event will feature pop up art galleries at the shops along Main Street, Chicago Avenue and Dempster Street in Evanston from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Most of the almost 40 participating artists are local to Evanston, with the remaining artists coming from Chicago and the North Shore. Guests will be able to visit galleries that include photography, painting, quilted illustrations, digital creations, ceramics, glassware, bronze statuary and something called “high voltage pyrography.”
“The Main-Dempster Mile’s vision statement is ‘to be a creative urban environment with an iconic small town personality,’” Gotsick said. “This event is perfectly aligned with our vision.”
Shops will stay open late to feature the works local artists and artisans, and to serve dessert and beverages to ticketed guests.
“We can’t wait for people to stop into one of our independently owned shops, see work from amazing local artists, and eat delicious food,” Gotsick said. “It’s everything we love about our neighborhood packed into one night.” Profits from the event will benefit Main-Dempster Mile public art initiatives.
A few of the artists whose work will be featured during the Sauce Walk include:
Local galleries, such as Perspective Group & Photography Gallery, Cultivate Urban Rainforest & Gallery, Open Studio Project, and Ice House Gallery, will participate in Sauce Walk, along with the newly opened Space 900 and Amanda Evanston Freund Studio & Gallery.
In addition, temporary art galleries will pop up inside businesses on Main, Dempster and Chicago, including Stumble & Relish, Cottage Jewelry, FRiO Gelato, Oscar Isberian Rugs, Few Spirits, Ten Thousand Villages, Sketchbook Brewing Co, and the not-quite-yet-open Reprise Roasters at 712 Main St.
"Stumble & Relish has the pleasure of working with many local artists throughout the year," said Jaime Leonardi, who owns the local shop with her mom. "Our community has a wealth of amazing artists in all media. We are excited for our business community to partner with artists and local dessert makers in a fun, casual way while getting to know our neighbors."
Also during the event, the Main-Dempster Mile will ask for help from the community in choosing an artist for the next neighborhood mural. One of the stops on the Sauce Walk will feature the work of finalists for the new mural, which will be funded by the Main-Dempster Mile. Visitors will be encouraged to offer feedback and vote on their favorites.
“We're very happy with the process and eager to see the community come together to celebrate art, give their input on our next public art installation, and raise money for our art initiatives,” Gotsick said.
