It could be something you do daily. Or maybe it’s something you put off as long as possible until you just can’t stand not being able to find your favorite black shirt a moment longer. Regardless of where you fall on the closet cleaning spectrum, the result is the same in the end.
A cleaner closet holds within its doors a more efficient start (and finish) to your day. So how do you keep it organized in a sustainable way?
Here are a few tips:
Don’t get overwhelmed
Strategy is key here. While it may seem like a great idea to empty the entirety of your closet onto your bed and start from scratch, that may not be the best way to tackle the situation. Instead, consider breaking up the tasks into smaller parts you can do over time. Start with shoes, then try shirts, and then pants and so on. Or you could break things down by color or season. Whatever you do, choose something that works for you.
Do get organized
There are all kinds of tips that can help make the most of your closet space. Doubling up on hangers by adding a metal tab from a soda can, for example, allows you to hang only one hanger on the rod while the other garment is secured below. Think outside the box when it comes to storage, too, using the space on top of the rod for storage, or even by adding some kind of shelving on the inside of the closet door.
Do develop a plan and stick to it
One way to know what to keep and what to donate when you’re doing a closet purge is to ask yourself a simple question: have you worn the item in the last six month? Have you touched that pair of jeans in the last year? The longevity may vary from person to person, but having an idea in mind of a threshold for how long is too long is a good place to start. Another thing to consider to maintain your hard work would be to add a weekly check point where you ask yourself the question: when was the last time I wore this?
It doesn’t matter whether you clean your closet once a year in the spring time or you prefer it to be in a constant state of chic.
